Northern Great Barrier Reef Sports Fishing
Great Barrier Reef Fishing is one of the fishing adventures you should do at least once in your lifetime. The Great Barrier Reef is the worlds longest coral reef covering over 300 000 Sq Klms from near PNG in the North to near Gladstone in the south. It was designated World Heritage Marine Park in 1981 and it has over 3000 reefs, 600 islands and coral cays and over 1500 species of fish and marine life.
Great Barrier Reef Fishing is best between November and March when the blustery S.E trade winds that dominate the reef have gone and the more gentle northerly winds prevail. We head to the far north Great Barrier Reef from Seisa near Thursday Island at the top of Cape York. This area of the reef is rarely visited as it is too far for the charter fleet from Cairns area to travel. Usually we have the whole area to ourselves. We will visit various islands, coral cays and reefs depending on prevailing weather conditions but often include Mt Adolphus, Johnson and Dugong islands, and reefs such as Kagar, Kai-Damun, Meggi-Damun, Bayang and Wap reef. This is the ultimate in Great Barrier Reef Fishing.
Fishing will include casting, jigging, trolling, popper fishing and fly fishing for the likes of Giant Trevally, Snapper, Red Bass, Mahi Mahi, Dog tooth and big eye Tuna, Marlin, Sail fish, Coral Trout and up to 50 other species. And they do not breed small fish out here!
Great Barrier Reef Fishing is perfect for sports fishing and fly fishing alike.
